Greggs has opened its first supermarket Bitesize Greggs at the Tesco Southwark Superstore, marking an expansion of its smaller shop format. This strategic move aligns with the growing demand for convenient, on-the-go food options in busy retail environments.
The move is part of the food-to-go retailer’s plan to offer its popular range to customers in compact units in high-footfall locations. By integrating into supermarkets, Greggs aims to capitalize on the steady stream of shoppers seeking quick, affordable meals and snacks.
The new location will be open seven days a week and has created 10 local jobs. The Greggs Bitesize store offers a full selection of products, including sausage rolls, steak bakes, sweet treats, and fairtrade hot drinks. This ensures customers can enjoy their favorite Greggs items without leaving the supermarket.
Liam Wagstaff, retail partnership manager at Tesco, said: “We’re always looking for ways to make the shopping trip even more convenient for our customers, and we’re pleased to welcome the first supermarket ‘Bitesize Greggs’ at our Southwark Superstore.

Now customers can pick up all their Greggs favourites while popping in to do their weekly shop, offering even greater convenience.” This partnership highlights Tesco’s commitment to enhancing the in-store experience by incorporating popular food brands.
Bitesize Greggs: A Growing Trend
This move follows successful openings of ‘Bitesize Greggs’ locations across London Bridge Station, Sevenoaks Railway Station, Dartford Station, and Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet. These locations have proven the viability of the Bitesize model in diverse, high-traffic settings.
Expansion Plans
This year, Greggs expects to open around 100 to 110 new shops and aims to open 3,500 UK shops over the long term. This ambitious target shows Greggs’ confidence in its business model and market potential.
Tony Rowson, property director at Greggs, said: “Our Bitesize format allows us to bring Greggs to more customers from compact units in convenient, high-footfall locations, while still offering a selection of our best-selling products.
