Meta Descriptions Remain Crucial for SEO Success

Meta descriptions continue to play a role in how search results appear, even though Google often builds snippets from page content instead of relying on the tag.

Google’s current stance on meta descriptions

According to the Search Central blog, the search engine “primarily uses the content on the page to automatically determine the appropriate snippet,” but it also notes that “we may also use descriptive information in the meta description element when it describes the page better than other parts of the content.” The guidance adds that at minimum, webmasters should create a description for critical URLs such as the home page and popular landing pages.

In a recent discussion, Google’s John Mueller said that a meta description “sometimes helps you to figure out a clear focus for a page” and that it is “still worthwhile to do so for individual pages that you care about, but it’s definitely not a requirement.” His comments imply that the tag is optional, yet not harmful.

There is no penalty for adding a description, and many SEO professionals keep them on key landing pages, category listings, and product detail pages. Those pages often hold detailed service or product information, specifications, and customer feedback that are difficult for algorithms to compress into a concise snippet.

Practical advice for writing effective descriptions

When a meta description is used, it should be unique, factual, and focused on the page’s core value. A typical recommendation is to keep the length under 130 characters, because both Google and generative AI models truncate longer text. Avoid subjective language such as “best” or “top,” and consider adding a call‑to‑action phrase like “Learn more” or “Compare.”

For large e‑commerce sites with thousands of items, Google suggests generating descriptions programmatically. Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude can draft the copy, but human editors need to review high‑traffic pages and top‑performing products to ensure accuracy.

One real‑world example comes from Klaviyo’s SMS pricing page, which uses the meta description: “Explore Klaviyo pricing and start free. Get email marketing sends, text message credits, Customer Hub, and reporting — all in one platform.” When the query “Klaviyo SMS pricing official 2026” was entered, both Google and ChatGPT displayed that exact text in the result snippet.

Looking ahead, the continued presence of the tag means that webmasters can still influence how their pages appear in search listings, especially for high‑intent queries where the description matches the user’s need better than any other on‑page text.

Meta tags still matter.

While the tag is not a strict ranking factor, its influence on click‑through rates can be noticeable. A well‑crafted description may entice a user to choose one result over another, even if the underlying ranking is similar.

In practice, the decision to add a meta description often hinges on the page’s importance. For pages that drive revenue or serve as entry points to a site’s core offerings, a concise, accurate summary can improve visibility in both traditional search results and AI‑generated answers. For lower‑priority pages, the effort may not be justified.
