Sur La Table, a prominent kitchenware retailer, has launched a peer-to-peer resale marketplace called Second Servings, marking an innovative move in the home goods sector. Powered by resale technology firm Archive, this platform enables users to sell eligible kitchenware, home goods, and dining products.
How Second Servings Works: A Full Breakdown
To facilitate seamless transactions on the Second Servings platform, users can follow these steps:
- Listing an Item: Users begin by uploading a photo of their item along with a product description. The platform’s Smart Pricing feature then suggests an initial price, which can be adjusted up to 30% off the original suggested retail price over time.
- Receiving Prepaid Shipping Labels: After setting the price and listing details, users receive prepaid shipping labels via email. These labels allow sellers to send their items to Sur La Table’s processing center at no cost.
- Earning Rewards: Once the item is sold, the seller receives compensation. They can choose to receive either 70% of the sale price in cash or 100% in Sur La Table store credit, providing flexibility and added value.
The platform’s backend operations, including customer support, payment processing, and logistics, are managed by Archive. This allows Sur La Table to focus on its core business while offering a full resale service to its customers.
Sur La Table’s Pioneering Entry into Peer-to-Peer Resale
Sur La Table’s foray into the peer-to-peer resale market represents an early adopter stance in the home goods space. While other retailers like Mattel and Ikea have launched similar initiatives, Sur La Table’s Second Servings venture is a notable first in the kitchenware and dining sector.

According to details emailed to Retail Dive, “Today’s home cooks are increasingly focusing on sustainability and savings. They want to extend the life of their favorite kitchenware pieces and dispose of them responsibly, and they’re looking for ways to save money on premium products.”
Second Servings allows Sur La Table to serve home cooks in two ways: by helping sellers give their favorite pieces a new life instead of contributing to landfill waste, and by helping younger and price-sensitive buyers discover premium kitchenware they might not otherwise consider purchasing.
Sur La Table’s Resurgence and New Ownership
Sur La Table’s journey to this innovative resale venture is rooted in its 2020 bankruptcy filing and subsequent acquisition by a joint venture between Marquee Brands and CSC Generation. Purchased for $88.9 million, the company now operates under new ownership that includes a portfolio of celebrated culinary brands such as Martha Stewart and Emeril Lagasse.
This change in ownership has allowed Sur La Table to explore new business models and initiatives, with Second Servings being a standout example. By adopting the resale trend and focusing on sustainability and savings, Sur La Table is positioning itself for long-term growth and success in the competitive home goods market.
