Nishi Patel, a retailer in Dartford, has built a reputation for identifying product trends that resonate with customers across his Londis stores. Speaking as summer concludes, Patel discussed which items performed strongly during the school holidays and what might gain traction in the coming months.

Summer Hits and Rapid Sales

Patel highlighted two product categories that saw significant demand: freeze-dried candies and Squishies. He noted these items sold exceptionally fast, with 500 units in two weeks or something crazy, maybe even 10 days. The summer school holidays likely contributed to this surge, he suggested.

He also addressed collectable fidget toys, admitting initial uncertainty about their appeal. While sales have slowed with the new school term, certain licensed lines, such as those featuring McDonald’s fries and KFC packaging, generated notable interest.

Supplier Networks Drive Trend Discovery

Patel relies on a broad network of suppliers and fellow retailers to identify emerging products. He explained that connections with national suppliers and participation in panels with companies like Coca-Cola and Nestlé provide early insights into trending items.

Additionally, Patel engages with retailer groups spanning Scotland, Wales, the Midlands, and Yorkshire. These collaborations allow for rapid information sharing and market testing of new products.

Social Media and Merchandising Strategy

Social media plays a critical role in promoting new product lines. Patel emphasized that online buzz can drive in-store demand, citing how Squishies expanded from one shelf to an entire bay during peak interest.

He manages a social media team but personally contributes content by filming product demonstrations in-store weekly. This approach helps amplify visibility across multiple platforms.

For physical placement, Patel prioritizes high-traffic areas like the front bay near the checkout. He believes this location maximizes exposure and encourages word-of-mouth sharing.

Upcoming Autumn and Seasonal Offerings

As the season shifts, Patel anticipates a focus on seasonal items like Halloween-themed products and new American soft drinks. He specifically mentioned expanded Monster Energy varieties and unique Fanta flavors as key targets for autumn.

Patel views US-branded beverages as opportunities for premium pricing. His strategy involves dedicating a specialized section within his usual drinks fridge to these products, differentiating them from everyday offerings.
